Information Management is typically concerned with an organisation instigating management procedures to ensure that all relevant documents (both hard copy and digital) are preserved in the event of pending litigation or criminal action against that company. It involves communicating the ‘duty to preserve’ to relevant staff members (including IT), modifying data retention policies appropriately, ceasing all technical activities that could delete, modify or overwrite data (overwriting backup tapes, compressing email databases etc), and generally demonstrating that best efforts have been made to comply with a current or pending order.
